PEARLS ~ Pearls add an understated but elegant compliment to any style of wardrobe. All the more reason to handle them with care. Because they are organic and comprised of calcium carbonate, pearls require more specialized care than most gem stones. .
Most jewelers will tell you pearls are the last to put on and the first to take off. Pearls are very sensitive to chemicals like perfumes, body oils, hair spray and deodorants. And even though some pearls originate from the ocean, they do not do well in salt water. Pearls should always be stored separately from other jewelry, preferably in a soft cloth bag. This prevents rubbing and scratching the pearl surface.
It is recommended that pearls which are worn often should be restrung and knotted every 2-4 years. The cost for restringing can vary from $2-4 an inch so chose a reputable jeweler.
To clean, gently wipe them with a soft cloth after wear. Do not use any harsh detergents as the lustrous surface can dull or even dissolve if placed in the wrong type of cleaner. Use a gentle soap such as Ivory and warm water, after rinsing lay on a soft cloth to dry thoroughly.
